"We fully support the goals, programs and ideals of this very important
movement," said Rev. Dr. Major Jemison, PNBC President. "Our concerns and issues
and those of the Millions More Movement are one in the same, and it is our
responsibility to continue the legacy of our founding members, Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr., Dr. L. Vencheal Booth, Dr. Gardner C. Taylor and others to address
these social concerns and to get actively involved in a movement that will be of
great benefit to our people. We stand ready to forge a strong leadership
coalition with our other organization so that together the various problems
facing of our people can be resolved."
PNBC’s Millions More Movement Resolution states that the Progressive National
Baptist Convention recognizes that no one organization or leader can solve the
many critical needs and problems facing Black people. Therefore, the Progressive
National Baptist Convention affirms that collaboration between and among Black
leaders and organizations is the foundation for addressing the problems. The
resolution states, "…our success depends now on our ability to all come
together, to think, to plan and to act on behalf of the whole of our people,…’
The PNBC recognizes that, as a people working together, we have within us,
the God given power, intellect, creativity, resiliency and the economic capacity
to lift our people from where we are to where God wants us to be…"
"The support and endorsement of the National Progressive Baptist Convention
is in keeping with God’s mandate, to help, the "least of these," said Minster
Louis Farrakhan, National Convener of the Millions More Movement. "The coalition
of leadership being developed among our leaders is a history making experience
that is long over due and that will resonate among the masses of our people."
The National Executive Director of the Millions More Movement, the Reverend
Willie F. Wilson, a PNBC pastor from Washington, DC who is the senior pastor at
the Union Temple Baptist Church said "this endorsement and full participation of
the Millions More Movement is a major step in the right direction for our people
as we begin to mobilize and strategize to empower the masses of our people to
improve their status in the arenas of health, education, economics, politics,
strong moral and spiritual values. The PNBC ‘s involvement in the movement
parallels its rich legacy as a champion for social justice, which is the agenda
on which it was found."
PNBC leaders resolved that "it will covenant in solemn agreement with the
AME’s, AMEZ’s, Pentecostals, other Baptists, Muslims and like-minded faith
communities and organizations such as the National
Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the National
Council of Negro Women
(NCNW), the National Urban League, National Federation of Colored Women’s
Clubs, fraternities and
sororities and countless other organizations in dedicated leadership,
resources and programs to create the spirit of unity among our people for the
accomplishment of a shared destiny."
The PNBC further resolved that it would mobilize all of the churches in their
convention and use its resources to get the word out. They will participate in
the weekly "Fast and Focus," where those attending the events and those
in support of it will take time to focus on the Millions More Movement and the
principles for its stands, Unity, Spiritual Values, Education Excellence,
Economic and Political Empowerment, Universal Healthcare, Housing, Cultural
Development, Justice and Peace. The Progressive National Baptist Church
recognizes that the 10th Anniversary Commemoration of the historic Million Man
March is an excellent time for all groups and organizations to organize and
mobilize our people nationally and put systems in place that will permit a
successful programmatic thrust to save our people; and ourselves
BACKGROUND:

			The Millions More Movement,
			which will commemorate the 10th
Anniversary of the Million Man March, is expected to exceed the estimated 1.2
million who attended the Million Man March in 1995. This year’s movement will
involve men, women and children and is designed to bring together all of the
diverse segments of the black national and international communities to create a
viable framework for resolving critical issues affecting millions of men, women,
children and families. It is a united campaign to reinvigorate efforts to
maximize dispossessed communities, develop a collective framework to respond to
critical concerns in economic, social, political, educational, health, financial
and cultural disparities and acknowledge the commonalities among black people.
The original Million Man March brought unprecedented numbers of African
American men to the nation’s capital and demonstrated a collective willingness
to atone for past shortcomings and to reconcile differences at home, school,
church, organizations and the society in general.
